Can I use HSA to buy glasses?

Health Savings Account (HSA) can be used to buy glasses. This includes prescription eyeglasses, prescription sunglasses, contact lenses, and eye exams.

What is HSA?

Health Savings Account, also known as HSA is a type of savings account that lets you set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses. By using untaxed dollars in a Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for deductibles, co-payments, coinsurance, and some other expenses, you may be able to lower your overall health care costs. HSA funds generally may not be used to pay premiums.

Who is eligible for HSA?

The IRS has strict guidelines for who is eligible to open and contribute to a health savings account.

Under the law, an eligible individual:

• • Must be 18 years of age or older

• • Must be covered under a qualified high-deductible health plan (HDHP) on the first day of a certain month

• • May not be covered under any health plan that is not a qualified HDHP
    • • There are limited exceptions to this

• • Must not be enrolled in Medicare (the healthcare component of the Social Security program)

• • May not be claimed as a dependent on another individual’s tax return

If you do not live in the United States, you can still open an HSA under certain circumstances:

• • You are a US citizen and are paid in US dollars

or

• • You are employed in the US and are paid in US dollars
    • • You will need a US-based Social Security Number/TIN to open an HSA – this is generally necessary to work in the US as well.

Note: If you are eligible for national health coverage in your home country (e.g., Canada), you are not eligible to contribute to an HSA.

Can I use HSA to buy glasses?

Since prescription glasses are meant to correct your vision, they are categorized as a health expense therefor HSA can be used to purchase them. Prescription Eyeglasses, Prescription Sunglasses, Contact Lenses, and Eye Exams also qualify. Please note that Non-Prescription Eye wear does not qualify, as it does not correct vision, and therefor is not a medical expense.
